What is Flagyl

Flagyl is an antibacterial drug with antiprotozoal action.

film-coated tablets: round, from light yellow to white, engraved with “F 250” on one side (10 pieces in blisters, 2 blisters in a carton box);

active ingredient: metronidazole – 250 mg;

Indications for use

  • protozoal infections: extraintestinal amebiasis, including amebic liver abscess, intestinal amebiasis (amebic dysentery), trichomoniasis;
  • infections caused by Bacteroides spp. (including B. Vulgatus, B. thetaiotaomicron, B. ovatus, B. distasonis, B. fragilis), infections of bones and joints, central nervous system, including meningitis, brain abscess, bacterial endocarditis, empyema and abscess of the lungs, sepsis, pneumonia;
  • Peptostreptococcus spp., Peptococcus niger and Clostridium spp. infections: infections of the pelvic organs (abscess of the fallopian tubes and ovaries, endometritis, vaginal fornix infections), infections of the abdominal cavity (abscess of the liver, peritonitis);
  • pseudomembranous colitis (the development of which was the use of antibacterial agents);
  • gastritis or duodenal ulcer associated with Helicobacter pylori (as part of a comprehensive treatment);
  • prevention of postoperative complications (especially gynecological operations, appendectomy, interventions on the adrectal region, colon).

Flagyl and alcohol

When taking Flagil, patients should refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages or drugs containing alcohol, since the combination of metronidazole with alcohol can have an effect similar to that of disulfiram (vomiting, hot flashes, tachycardia).

Flagyl dosage

Flatiil is taken orally with water, before or after meals.

Dosing regimen:

  • intestinal amebiasis: 6 pcs. per day, divided into 3 doses for 1 week;
  • acute amebic dysentery: adults – 9 pcs. per day, divided into 3 doses; children from 10 to 15 years old – 1 pc. 2 times a day;
  • abscess of the liver and other extraintestinal forms of amebiasis: adults – 10 pcs. per day, divided into 3 doses (maximum daily dose) for 3-5 days in combination with tetracycline antibacterial drugs and other methods of treatment; children from 10 to 15 years old – 1 pc. 2 times a day;
  • trichomoniasis in women (urethritis and vaginitis) and men (urethritis): once 8 pcs., or 1 pc. 2 times a day for 10 days;
  • anaerobic infections: the treatment begins with the intravenous administration of flagil solution, then the patient is transferred to tablets – 2 pcs. 3 times a day. Duration of therapy – up to 1 week;
  • pseudomembranous colitis: 2 pcs. 3-4 times a day. The duration of therapy is determined by the doctor individually;
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication: 2 pcs. 3 times a day as part of a combined treatment (for example, with amoxicillin);
  • prevention of postoperative complications: 3–4 days before surgery – 3–6 pcs. per day, divided into 3 doses, after 1–2 days after surgery – 3 pcs. per day for 1 week.

Flagyl side effects

When taking Flagyl registered the following side effects:

  • from the gastrointestinal tract: metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, dry mouth, glossitis, loss of appetite, stomatitis, anorexia, pancreatitis, diarrhea, vomiting, epigastric pain;
  • on the part of NA: dizziness, headache, incoordination, irritability, confusion, irritability, depression, convulsions, insomnia, peripheral neuropathy, hallucinations;
  • allergic reactions: skin hyperemia, urticaria, fever, allergic rhinitis;
  • on the part of the urinary system: cystitis, polyuria, dysuria, candidiasis, urinary incontinence, brown staining of urine;
  • local reactions: burning sensation in the genital area, vulvitis;
  • others: neutropenia, leukopenia, flattening of the T wave on the electrocardiogram.
